This Election Day, November 4, 2008, marks a pivotal moment for our country and its energy future. As Americans, we must recognize this opportunity to take back our economic and energy security and change the course of Washington and do so decisively and boldly.
Energy Independence Now! stands with the American people as the voice of reason and an engine for dramatic, forward-thinking change. Below are highlights of what Energy Independence Now! will advocate in Washington on oil, electricity, alternative energy, and the need for innovation.
Our message to America is simple: You are being heard, loud and clear. With your support, we can make 2008 the turning point for America’s energy course.
1. Attacking High Oil Prices
Our platform on gas prices is simple:
- Drill more.
- Refine more.
- Tax less.
- Regulate less.
- Create incentives for private innovation.
2. Taking Advantage of Nuclear Power
The hydroelectric grid is approaching capacity, and other key renewables, such as wind and solar-sourced energy, must play a growing role. We must find a way to make better use of renewable sources of energy.
Clean, safe nuclear power offers working families clean, affordable energy that can keep up with the demands of the dynamic American economy.
The mindless political opposition to nuclear power simply must stop. Even Patrick Moore -- the co-founder of Greenpeace! -- has recognized the nuclear energy offers the best way forward. "Nuclear energy is the only non- greenhouse-gas-emitting power source capable of effectively replacing fossil fuels and satisfying growing demand,” he said recently.
3. Encouraging Private Sector Innovation
I support the creation of large financial prizes to be awarded by the federal government to companies and individuals who achieve important milestones in achieving America's energy goals, such as inventing an affordable, practical car that meets or exceeds a 100 mpg goal, or a new and safer way to dispose of nuclear waste products, or new ways to cut pollution, or new, clean energy sources.
I also support tax incentives for the creation and use of alternatives fuels for vehicle use. I believe that the federal government must encourage local governments and municipalities to make smart use of LEDs, which can dramatically reduce power when used in traffic signals and other municipal applications. I support incentives for development of other uses as well and support federal programs that would defray the cost of installation using grants or low interest loans, which can be re-paid from energy savings.
4. Protecting Consumers and Encouraging Conservation
All levels of government have a responsibility to aggressively enforce laws that protect consumers from criminal wrongdoing that make energy costs even higher.
Likewise, federal, state and local governments all must find ways to encourage energy conservation and find improvements in renewable energy.
